First half of the semester:

1. Preliminary issues. An introduction to the source theory.
2. The structure of the early manuscript and print. Text and music notation.
3.-7. Music sources of the 13th-17th centuries.

Second half of the semester:

8.-9. Music manuscripts and early prints on the example of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.
10.-11. Neue-Bach-Ausgabe as a model of critical edition.
12.-14. Other music sources of the 18th and 19th centuries.

First half of the semester (Agnieszka Leszczyńska):
1.-2. Preliminary issues: systematics of sources, structure of early musical manuscripts and prints, material, watermarks, bindings, provenance entries, basic issues of paleography, the problem of false sources.
3.-7. Selected sources of polyphony from the 13th-16th centuries, including:
- fragments from Stary Sącz
- Kras 52 (National Library)
- trecento fragments (Archdiocesan Archives in Poznań)
- Rorantists manuscripts (Archives of the Kraków Cathedral Chapter)
- so-called Olkusz and Sandomierz partbooks (Music Department of the University of Warsaw Library)
- prints from St. Marienkirche in Elbląg (Music Department of the University of Warsaw Library)
- Emanuel Wurstisen’s lute tablature (Universitätsbibliothek Basel)
- MS Mariale (National Library)
- MS 4003 (Polish Academy of Sciences - Gdańsk Library).

8. Introduction to music editing (history and types of editing)
9. Criticism of the musical source (selection and stages of work)
10. Criticism of the musical text (concepts and methods)
11. Editing of the verbal text (preparation and standards)
12. Preparation for critical editing
13. Editing of the musical text
14. Revision commentary

First half of the semester (Agnieszka Leszczyńska):
The condition for passing the first part of the semester is active attendance at classes (one absence is allowed) and submission of a paper describing a selected print from the turn of the 16th/17th century before January 30, 2026. A list of sources to choose from (among digitized prints from the National Library, the Jagiellonian Library and the Polish Academy of Sciences Gdańsk Library) will be made available to students at the beginning of the semester.

Second half of the semester (Tomasz Jeż):
The condition for passing the half-semester is active attendance at classes (one unexcused absence during the half-semester is allowed). The basis for passing is the half-semester paper - a scientific review of a selected critical edition, prepared no later than the last class.
