First half of the semester:

1. Preliminary issues. An introduction to the source theory.
2. The structure of the early manuscript and print. Text and music notation.
3.-7. Music sources of the 13th-17th centuries.

Second half of the semester:

8.-9. Music manuscripts and early prints on the example of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.
10.-11. Neue-Bach-Ausgabe as a model of critical edition.
12.-14. Other music sources of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Prerequisites (description)

The course aims to familiarize students with the basic knowledge of music sources and ways to use this knowledge when preparing critical music editions. Prerequisites: musicological knowledge at the undergraduate level (no BA in musicology is required), the ability to apply it to a critical evaluation of the text and musical notation.

Assessment criteria

Pass conditions: active participation in classes and own description of a selected source, agreed with the lecturers.
