Introduction to Digital Humanities 3105-WDHC1-M-III
The course is conceived as an overview of the basic methods and
tools of digital humanities. They aim to familiarise participants with
the digital technologies most commonly used in humanities research
and in working with cultural heritage resources. The course will
focus on various methods of digital documentation, digital resource
management, processing, reuse and sharing, taking into account
the different types of these resources.
The class will provide theoretical knowledge, but a large part of it
will be devoted to workshop work, during which participants will
acquire concrete practical skills.
Classes will be taught by employees of the Digital Competence
Center of the University of Warsaw, who specialise in particular
issues and have competence and practical experience in the
implementation of digital humanities projects.
Topics:
1. Introduction
2. Digitization of cultural heritage resources – assumptions,
standards, good practices.
3. Digitization of cultural heritage resources – practical
workshops.
4. Basic principles of managing digitized resources. Data and
metadata.
5. Basics of copyright law. Free and open licenses in the
practice of using digital tools and conducting research.
6. Infrastructure of open science and culture.
7. Digital editions – basics of XML and TEI.
8. Digital editions – project work using dedicated tools.
9. Introduction to 2D and 3D digital documentation and
visualization – overview, areas of application. Benefits and
pitfalls of 3D documentation.
10. Data acquisition – 2D and 3D scanning. 3D models.
Software.
11. Photogrammetry as a method of 3D documentation.
12. Visualization, export, presentation of 3D models.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student:
- knows the basic methods and digital tools to support
scientific work and the organisation, access and processing
of cultural heritage resources
- can identify appropriate digital methods and tools in relation
to the specific characteristics of resources
- is familiar with the basics of copyright law and the principles
of open science/open access
- has a basic theoretical knowledge of the technical
fundamentals of digital methods and is aware of their
limitations
- has basic practical skills in digitisation, digital
documentation, processing and sharing of various types of
data and resources
