The Sacred Iconography of the Eastern Orthodox Christians 3102-LISO-OG
Topics and viewpoints to be discussed: sacred iconography (icons, frescoes, mosaics, miniatures) in relation to apocryphal and biblical stories; icons' origins, theology and liturgical elements. The course is accompanied by multimedia presentation of Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian and Russian iconography. The objective is to teach the students to distinguish particular biblical scenes, most popular saints and the symbolism of images. The course presents Byzantine images as well as local themes and variations pertaining rather to folk art. On one hand, sacred iconography is interpreted as biblia pauperum, on the other - as an illustration of local beliefs, which often constitute an inspiration for the choice of exposed saints or images of a specific region.
