Mycenaean archaeology 3101-DK0219
The course is dedicated to theoretical and practical problems in Mycenaean archaeology (the Late Bronze Age on mainland Greece). We will discuss the latest trends in Mycenaean archaeology, in current field research and interpretations. We will focus both on new and older excavations of settlements and cemeteries (on the basis of excavation/survey reports, and final publications), as well as on various groups of objects (pottery, terracotta figurines, metal objects, jewellery, seals, weapons, etc.). We will explore places like palaces, houses, sanctuaries and cult places, workshops, magazines, cemeteries; their plans, characteristics and functions will be analysed in detail. On the basis of the Linear B texts and archaeological remains we will discuss social and economical aspects in the Mycenaean states. Finally, various problems of the Mycenaean religion and art will be examined.
