In the shadow of the Celts. Pre-Roman Iron Age in Central and Northern Europe 3101-DFCEL
Classes devoted to the archaeology of the in central and northern Europe. Their goal is to gain knowledge about the most important historical events in Barbaric Europe dated to 4th–1st c. BC and to understand the process of "latenization" (cultural transformation following the La Tene Culture patterns) of the Germanic tribes settled north of the Celts.
Classes take the mixed form of a lecture and a seminar, during which the participants present chosen aspects of this subject.
The course includes:
- The introduction to the archeology of the pre-Roman (La Tene) Iron Age: terminology, chronology, classifications;
- Discussion on the La Tene Culture and on the migrations and raids of the Celtic tribes;
- Discussion on the early pre-Roman Iron Age - before the "latenization" (the Jastorf Circle including Scandinavia, and also the Pomeranian and the West Balt Barrows Cultures);
- Discussion on "latenized" cultures of the late pre-Roman Iron Age (the Jastorf Circle including Scandinavia and the Poienesti-Lukasevka Culture, and also the Przeworsk, Oksywie, and Zarubincy Culture) and on the migrations and raids of Bastarne, Cimbri and Teuton tribes;
- Characterization and comparison of the processes of "latenization" (causes, ways, results).

Learning outcomes
Extended knowledge of the cultural diversity in central and northern Barbaricum in the 2nd half of the 1st millennium BC, and the knowing of the early Iron Age archaeology. The ability of an analysis and interpretation of the artifacts, and understanding of the processes of cultural, economic and social changes, which took place within the “latenized” communities.
Assessment criteria
- Written test at the end of the semester
- Presentation on a given subject
- Activity during the classes
