Archaeology of the Paleolithic and Mesolithic 3101-DB201A
The first part of the course (the winter semester) has an introductory character, are discussed general scope of research issues, criteria and systems of periodization, chronology, the nature of the climate and environmental conditions of the Pleistocene and Holocene, research methods, biological evolution of man. Another group of issues form the basis of the analysis, description and interpretation of flint artifacts.
The second part (spring semester) is devoted to discussion of the cultural situation in Africa and Eurasia during the period from 3.5 million to 4.5 thousand years ago, and a detailed description of the major taxonomic units.

Learning outcomes
Student:
has a basic knowledge abaut attribution and classification of flint artefacts;
has a basic knowledge about typologyof flint artefacts;
has a basic knowledge about attribution main classes of the human culture products in the Paleolithic and Mesolithic;
has a strong knowledge about chronology and periodization of the Stone Age;
has a basic knowledge about climate and environmental changes during the Pleistocene and early Holocene and their impact on the development of societies in this period;
has a basic knowledge about the main directions of development and major new developments in research on the Paleolithic and Mesolithic;
knows the basic rules for the selection and critical assessment of the information contained in scientific publications on Paleolithic and Mesolithic;
can use basic concepts of research and has mastered the skill set specific to the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archeology;
has the ability to self-analysis and classification of the main categories of flint artifacts;
detect simple relationships between the artifacts and the cultural and social processes during the Paleolithic and Mesolithic;
can communicate using a variety of communication channels and techniques from experts in the field of archeology of the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic (in Polish and English);
has the ability to prepare written work and oral presentations in the form of multimedia presentations on specific issues of the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archeology (in Polish and English);
able to interact and work in a group in the tasks related to the analysies of archaeological sources from the Stone Age, and selected issues from the literature;
understand the ethical issues related to scientific integrity in research into Stone Age.
Assessment criteria
1. Preparation of two essays on selected issues concerning research on the Stone Age where 1 must be delivered to the public in the form of paper (about the work is determined individually with the teacher)
2. Passing two colloquia: "Identification of raw flint", "Identification of the main types of forms of flint"
3. Annual written test
