Latvian Translation Workshop 1 3020-BB1TSL
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basic concepts of translation theory and to form their translation competence in Latvian. The course is designed to expand the lexical resource (both active and passive) and shape the skills of translating literary texts (the concept of linguistic stylization, the phenomenon of cultural non-translatability), specialized texts and official documents. The course program also includes a discussion of common translation errors and methods of solving translation problems, based on translation strategies.

Knowledge and skills:
- knows various translation strategies and is able to apply them while performing translation independently;
- recognizes the basic translation techniques used in the translation of literary texts and is able to evaluate their quality and appropriateness;
- has a structured knowledge of the phenomena related to the translation process;
- knows the basic principles of certified translation;
- has an adequate vocabulary, terms and phrases used in writings of an official nature in Latvian (within the scope of the translations carried out);
- performs translations with precision and care, maintaining linguistic correctness and conformity of the translated text with the original.
Social competencies:
- Understands the need to actively participate in his/her own learning; works systematically, enriches active and passive vocabulary.
Assessment criteria
Regular attendance at classes; activity and current preparation for classes; a credit work - translation of a text (selection of texts to be translated after consultation with class participants).
