MA Seminar in Baltic Literatures 3020-BB1S-L-JT
The participants of the course broaden their knowledge about the methodology of conducting research, get acquainted with studies in the field covered by the seminar, with particular focus on texts related to the subject of their own diploma thesis. They will also get acquinted with the search tools appropriate for philology, learn how to select and use information from written and electronic sources.

seminar - 60 hours (2 ECTS)

consultations, material collection and preparation for writing the thesis - 240 hours (8 ECTS)
preparation of a credit paper - 60 hrs (2 ECTS)

Term 2023:
The seminar will discuss the works of authors who were not included in the basic program of the "History of Lithuanian Literature" course or less canonical texts of writers already known. Looking at the history of Lithuanian literature from a slightly different perspective will allow seminar participants to develop analytical competences, sensitize to different points of view and interpretation strategies, develop the ability to independently assess historical and literary processes. Students will learn the methodology of conducting research, critical analysis of the text and learn about new developments in the field of the seminar covered. At the next stages, the seminar participants prepare an outline of the work, collect a bibliography and present the results of their work in the form of self-reports. |

KNOWLEDGE:
- the student is aware of the latest literary trends;
- recognises the key authors of Lithuanian/Latvian literature and is able to characterise their works;
- knows the terminology and research methodologies specific to literary studies;
- understands the relationship of literary studies with other humanities disciplines;
- Knows basic notions and principles of intellectual property and copyright.
SKILLS:
- Analyses literary and literary-critical texts independently;
- summarises and critiques research theses presented;
- is able to select and use the relevant literature in the course of research and preparation of the master's thesis;
- is able to synthesise literary phenomena and themes;
- is able to problematise issues of interest to him/her;
- is able to conduct research work under the guidance of a supervisor.
SOCIAL COMPETENCES:
- The student understands the ethical issues related to scientific integrity and honesty when conducting research and scientific discussions;
- is ready to make a proper assessment of the acquired knowledge and his/her own achievements.
Assessment criteria
Evaluation of activity and current preparation for classes, presentation of a preliminary thesis for discussion.
Students are entitled to 2 absences per semester, each subsequent absence should be credited in a manner agreed with the instructor.
During the course, students may use SI tools, e.g. for collecting materials, compiling research status and creating bibliographies. The use of SI tools for interpretative purposes, for the creation of a written statement or for the elaboration of text extracts is excluded.
