Monographic Seminar on Linguistics 1 3020-BB1KM-J
The lecture presents major theoretical issues of wordnets and framenets. A substantial part of a course is analysis of the data from wordnets and framenets with special respect to the Polish databases Słowosieć and RAMKI.
The introductory part of the course covers basic theory: a concept of lexical unit, a lexical frame, semantic relations, and lexical functions. Some further remarks deals with the deep and surface linguistic phenomena, then Princeton WordNet and Polish wordnet "Słowosieć" (two largest wordnets of all) are introduced and discussed.
Next part covers deep syntax in two classic Ch. Fillmore's theories - the theory of deep cases and frame semantics, to contrast it J. D. Apresjan's lexical functions are examined as a part of deep syntactic structure in I. A. Mel'chuk's Meaning<=>Text Theory.

Learning outcomes
A student knows basic concepts of the relevant theories, can differnetiate deep and surface syntactic relations. He/she knows how to classify and specify the semantic characteristics of a lexical units in frame semantics and in a wordnet. A student is able to differentiate lexical units according to principles of a framenet/wordnet, he/she can compile a record in both semantic nets for Polish (RAMKI and "Słowosieć").
Assessment criteria
Test that evaluates students’ ability to apply methods studied to Polish.
Practical placement
none
