Latvian language (B1) 3020-BA3NLO
Latvian language course for students of Baltic philology, starting at A2 level. Upon completion of the course, participants will have reached language proficiency level B1 according to the scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
During the course, students:
(a) expand their knowledge and skills in the grammar of Latvian, learn new grammatical structures (participle forms: active and passive, reflexive and non-reflexive; compound tenses; definite and indefinite forms of adjectives; pronouns: indicative, relative, indefinite, reflexive; subordinate compound sentences);
b) expand the lexis of previously learnt topics (everyday life), master the lexis of new topics (cultural life, social problems, abstract concepts);
c) develop previously acquired communication skills and improve pronunciation;
e) construct longer and more grammatically complex written texts (summary, informal letter) and oral texts on new topics.
Estimated number of hours needed to achieve the defined learning outcomes:
(a) number of contact hours: 120 hrs.
(b) ongoing preparation for classes: 60 hrs.
(c) preparation of longer written papers and oral presentations: 60 hrs.
d) preparation for the semester test and the final examination 60 hours.

On completion of the course the student:
(KNOWLEDGE)
- correctly identifies and interprets the grammatical structures mastered during the course, uses them more consciously, constructing more complete written and oral statements;
(SKILLS)
- (SKILLS) reads correctly the main idea of an authentic spoken text (spoken at a natural pace and with a simple structure);
- can respond adequately, albeit using a limited range of lexical and linguistic devices, in spontaneous communicative situations;
- can write a structured text (formal letter, personal letter, application letter) as well as producing an unstructured longer written piece on topics of everyday or professional interest;
- applies compensatory strategies.
(ATTITUDES)
- understands the need to be systematic and to take an active part in his/her own learning.
Assessment criteria
The final examination, for which the student is admitted on condition that he/she passes the tutorials on time.
It is compulsory to obtain credit from each of the instructors; credit for the winter semester must be obtained by the student at the latest in the make-up session of the winter semester, and credit for the summer semester before the set date for the final examination.
Terms and conditions for obtaining semester credit (for a grade):
a) attendance - acceptable (the student is entitled to 2 absences per semester with each lecturer, each subsequent absence must be credited in a manner agreed in advance with the lecturer; absence from 50% of classes (with each lecturer) excludes obtaining credit;
b) positive grades in mid-semester and semester written tests;
c) current preparation for classes;
d) timely submission of all written work assigned by the instructors;
e) active participation in classes.
The final examination consists of a written and an oral part.
The written part tests:
a) comprehension of authentic listening text;
b) comprehension of authentic written text;
c) knowledge of grammatical forms and constructions (completion test, transformations);
d) vocabulary on the topics covered;
e) ability to produce a longer written statement of a specific form on a given topic.
The oral part includes:
a) comprehension of an authentic written text and brief oral expression on its subject (summary of the text, paraphrasing, expression of own position, brief argumentation);
b) communicative skills (communicativeness, appropriateness of linguistic responses).
During class preparation, students may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support the learning process. During class, AI tools may only be used at the explicit request of the instructor. The use of AI tools for written statements, presentations or other assessable tasks is excluded.
