Methodology in Literary Studies 3020-BA2MBL
The class continues and deepens the content presented in the subject Introduction to Literary Studies. In the course, students will become familiar with the main currents of literary theory. The course discusses the most important critical schools, their representatives, including literary scholars from the Baltic States (Lithuania: Viktorija Daujotytė, Juozapas Girdzijauskas, Algirdas Julius Greimas, Algis Kalėda, Bronislava Kerbelytė, Kęstutis Nastopka, Marija Aušrinė Pavilionienė, Rimvydas Šilbajoris, Vanda Zaborskaitė, Saulius Žukas; Latvia: Guntis Berelis, Maija Burima, Ausma Cimdiņa, Māra Grudule, Viktors Hausmanis, Viktors Ivbulis, Ieva E. Kalniņa, Benedikts Kalnačs, Ingrīda Kiršentāle, Janīna Kursīte, Anita Rožkalne, Benita Smilktiņa, Dzidra Vārdaune, Kārlis Vērdiņš, Broņislavs Tabūns, and others), and representative theoretical texts. In addition, class participants will learn the basic terminology of literary studies in the Baltic languages.
The class participants will then analyse selected literary texts (Polish translations from Baltic literatures, whenever possible) with the help of selected theories.

5. Structuralism.
6. Semiotics and narratology.
7. Post-structuralism and deconstruction.
8. Feminism.
9. Gender and queer.
10. Pragmatism.
11.. Hstoricism and New Historicism.
12. Postcolonialism.
13. Ecocriticism.
14. Cognitive poetics. Digital humanities.
15. Course overview and presentation of final essay concepts.
Estimated number of hours needed to achieve the defined learning outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student:
KNOWLEDGE
- knows and understands selected theories and methodologies of research in literary studies,
- knows and understands terminology of literary studies in Polish, Lithuanian, and Latvian,
- recognises the names of leading scholars of literature,
- knows and understands the role and relationship of literary studies with other fields of humanities;
SKILLS
- can analyse a literary work using theories and tools learnt,
- can discuss, argue and draw conclusions about an analysis of a literary work, also in writing,
- is able to use literary terminology in Polish and in the Baltic languages;
SOCIAL COMPETENCES
- is ready to further develop his/her knowledge and skills,
- is ready to discuss and properly evaluate the significance of humanistic reflection.
Assessment criteria
Evaluation of participation and preparation for classes, final essay: analysis of a selected literary text in the light of one of the discussed theories.
Students are entitled to 2 absences in a semester, each subsequent one should be credited in a way agreed with the teacher.
During the course, students may use AI tools e.g. to collect materials, compile the state of research and create bibliographies (after verification). The use of AI tools for interpretative purposes, for the creation of a written text or fragments of the text is not allowed.
