The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the most important problems and approaches in contemporary linguistics, and to assist them in the selection of topics and material when writing their dissertations. The course discusses the most important sections and phenomena undertaken by contemporary language theory, such as modality, vagueness or the pronoun system. Contemporary methods and approaches are confronted with those proposed in linguistics of the second half of the 20th century. |

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student:
- analyzes the basic linguistic phenomena and processes of the thematic area covered in the conversation;
- is able to use the grid of basic linguistic concepts and terms;
- is able to select an appropriate methodology for the description of linguistic phenomena;
- understands the influence of language on the conceptualisation of the world.
Assessment criteria
Attendance check (the student is entitled to 2 absences per semester, each subsequent absence should be credited in a manner agreed with the instructor) and evaluation of active participation in class.
Final test conducted in written form including open questions and choice questions.
