Podczas zajęć zostaną poruszone poniższe zagadnienia: 
– Powstanie językoznawstwa historyczno-porównawczego. Jego rozwój. Główni przedstawiciele i ich dzieła ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem badań nad językami bałtyckimi w nawiązaniu do języków germańskich i słowiańskich. 
– Opis fundamentalnych osiągnięć językoznawstwa historyczno-porównawczego, obejmujący między innymi rekonstrukcję języka praindoeuropejskiego, prawa głosowe, analogię, apofonię, rekonstrukcję wewnętrzną, rekonstrukcję zewnętrzną, teorię drzewa genealogicznego, teorię falową, teorię laryngalną i in. 
– Języki indoeuropejskie. Rozpad jedności praindoeuropejskiej na dialekty satem i kentum. Rodziny i grupy języków indoeuropejskich. Ekspansja języków indoeuropejskich na świecie. 
– Rozróżnienie językoznawstwa historyczno-porównawczego i typologii językowej. 
– Podstawowa terminologia językoznawcza spotykana w opracowaniach historyczno-porównawczych.

Prerequisites (description)

The aim of the conversion course is to extend the knowledge acquired in the class "Introduction to Linguistics" and to prepare the student to conduct research in linguistics.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student:
- analyzes the basic linguistic phenomena and processes of the thematic area covered in the conversation;
- is able to use the grid of basic linguistic concepts and terms;
- is able to select an appropriate methodology for the description of linguistic phenomena;
- understands the influence of language on the conceptualisation of the world.

Assessment criteria

Ongoing assessment of class participation, a paper on a selected topic, a final written test containing open-ended and multiple-choice questions.

Students are allowed two absences per semester; any additional absences must be approved by the instructor.
