History of Philosophy 3020-BA2HFI
The aim of the lecture with elements of tutorial is to familiarise students with basic philosophical issues and selected schools and trends in Western philosophy from antiquity to the 20th century. The material on the main branches of philosophy (epistemology, ontology, axiology) will be discussed in historical order (antiquity, the Middle Ages, modernity, the 19th century, the 20th century). Apart from the issues of the main branches of philosophy, selected issues will be discussed: the philosophy of religion, the philosophy of culture, the philosophy of politics and social philosophy, anthropology, the philosophy of nature, the methodology of sciences. Moreover, the classes in the exercise part will be a practical introduction to the analysis and interpretation of philosophical texts.

Learning outcomes
The student knows basic concepts, major philosophical orientations and doctrines in the history of Western culture, identifies philosophical problems, uses basic philosophical terminology. He/she knows the basic methods of interpreting a philosophical text.
The student detects the relationship between the formation of philosophical ideas and social and cultural processes, understands the importance of philosophical reflection in the formation of culture, understands the historical variability of the meanings of language.
Assessment criteria
The basis for assessment in the tutorial part is preparation and activity in class.
The course concludes with an oral examination.
