Polish art in comparison with European art (1864-1914) 3007-A831ES1
I. First semester will cover the development of Polish school of realistic painting so called mazowiecka school - Maksymilian Gierymski, Aleksander Gierymski, Józef Chełmoński i Stanisław Witkiewicz. A fight for new painting and new rules of artistic criticism are contrasted with the works of Polish historical painting of Jan Matejko, Henryk Siemiradzki and they are presented in view of the rules of academic painting. The role of Munich centre in development of Polish art in view of the recent research. Context of French painting ;towards impressionism from Gustaw Courbet to Edouard Manet. Impressionist landscape painting of Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley and Camille Pissarro. Polish impressionst episode of the ninties and its connections with the French painting: Władysław Podkowiński and Jozef Pankiewicz. Impressionist landscapes of Stanisław Wyspiański and Jan Stanisławski. European fascinations with Japanese art. Polish collectors and Japanese influences on the Polish painters.
Second semester will focus on European and Polish secession in painting, applied arts and architecture. Main centres of seccession - Brussles, Glasgow, Paris, Nancy, Vienna, Barcelona, Prague, Kraków, Lwów, Warszawa. The forerunners (eg. English prerafalites) and the main European artists: William Morris, Henri van de Velde, Hector Guimard, Louis Majorelle, Emile Gallé, Gustav Klimt, Victor Horta, Antonio Gaudi and others. The Cracow school of secession stained glass: St. Wyspiański and J. Mehoffer (the most important exhibitions of the latest years in Cracow and in Paris). French school of poster from Jules Cheret to Alphons Mucha and Henri Toulouse -Lautrec. Polish secession poster - St. Wyspiański, K. Frycz, J. Bukowski, J. Czajkowski, T. Axentowicz and others (the last Cracow exhibition). Beautiful book in European and Polish art. Illustration in Polish artistic magazines. " Chimera " in comparison with European magazines. Beautiful book the art of beautiful book - illustrations and decorations. The art of painting in Polish secession - Mehoffer and Wyspianski. Triumph of secession painting and its connections with architecture - Gustaw Klimt.
II. During the seminar a student will acquire the knowlege about Polish and European art of the second half of 19th century, its main trends and representatives and its parallels in the literature of that period.
