Elements of Classical Culture 3006-EKA1
The classes are aimed on the one hand at the analysis of the essential problem to understand the achivements of the Greek culture of early periods (the phenomenons which combine politics and customs, the history of institutions and the human mentality are examined, on the other hand at familiarizing the students with the various types of sources which are essential for the reconstruction of elements of the world of the ancient Greeks (various types of poetry, historiographical works etc.). We try to understand the specificity, research problems and above all the limitations of the various types of sources. This way we learn not only the research skill of the historian of antiquity (and of the historian in general) and also the limitations of their research methods. So the leitmotif of our work is the critical reading of both the ancient sources and contemporary studies and also critical consideration of our own research.
