Polish popular literature of the 2nd half of 19th century contrasted with the high literature 3001-B033LP2

The classes are devoted to examining Polish high and popular literature from the period 1864-1918 from a comparative perspective. Each next class is to make students familiar with rather unknown popular texts and refresh their knowledge on the highly artistic texts. During each class students try to find the answer to the question about the characteristics of popular literature. The criterion according to which the popular and high texts are combined is the topic of a given work. During the class we shall raise the issues important for understanding the period: the problem of understanding the term ‘modernism’, the social division of the Poles, the problem of the ‘Alien’ and the ‘Other’ in literature, the problem of art and the artist, issues from history, the main trends in art, the 1905-1907 revolution, and also the fact of foggy borderlines between the popular and high literature. The classes are supposed to make students aware of the existence of ‘white spots’ in the history of Polish literature – thus the appeal to the sociology of literature, the issues of research into the readership. The attempts to set criteria according to which it is possible to make a division between high and popular literature are supposed to boost the students’ research activity.

Prerequisites (description)

Students must have completed the 2nd year of the Polish Studies. Before starting the course a student should have the basic knowledge about the problems of the Polish high and popular literature from the time 1864-1918: know the periodization, basic trends in art and also have the analytical apparatus allowing to interpret literary texts of the period (especially the knowledge about poetics).

Learning outcomes

On completing the course a student has the knowledge of the Polish high and popular literature from 1864-1918 analyzed during the classes. He can recognize the characteristics of both high and popular texts and qualify each text according to the trend it represents. He can also interpret a popular text not only for a historian’s or literature critic’s point of view but also with the use of some elements from the sociology of literature. He can explain why the realizations of a given topic in popular and high literature are different from each other. He is familiar with the most important aspects of the Polish literature of the period 1864-1918. He can interconnect texts pertaining to popular and high literature and discuss about these connections.
