Theories of Sexuality 3000-PISB1-TS
The course is devoted to present and past cultural understandings of sexuality. We are tentatively planning the following list of topics:
(1) Foucault: sexuality and power; (2) social constructivism (3) queer in thinking about history (4) queer anti-normativity (5) queer negativity and utopianism (6) sexuality and class (7) lesbian continuum vs. lasbian sex (8) trans: introduction (9) transfemininity, transmasculinity (10) disability (11) asexuality (12) heterosexuality and its discontents (13) violence and consent (14) locality.

Learning outcomes
In terms of knowledge:
- has an in-depth knowledge of the concepts and theories of contemporary research on gender and sexuality
-understands the cultural, scientific and social conditions of the emergence of contemporary theories of sexuality
- knows the trajectories of development of research on gender and sexuality, including queer theory
- is able to identify the theoretical and political implications of various cultural studies theories of sexuality.
I terms of skills:
- can read and interpret theoretical texts in the field of sexuality theory, including queer theory
- can independently analyze a cultural text in terms of the construction of gender and sexuality
- recognizes the relationship between sexuality and other axes of social inequality
- understands the conflicts between different strands of emancipation movements
- knows and evaluates the arguments used in contemporary debates on feminism and LGBTQ+ politics.
In terms of social competences:
- understands the importance of discourses of sexuality for contemporary culture
- is able to take and justify his or her position in current debates about gender and sexuality
- is able to participate in discussions about sexuality and gender with respect for the positions and opinions of other participants.
Assessment criteria
The prerequisite for passing the class is active participation in class and passing the final exam. Absences must be excused with the class instructors. A student is entitled to two excused or unexcused absences per semester. A person with three to five absences in a semester must make up the absences as determined by the instructor. Absences (even excused!) for more than five classes (30%) in a semester will result in not being allowed to pass the class. Only those with an Individual Study Arrangement granted based on the opinion of the BON may have an increased limit of absences, but not more than 50% in a semester.
Estimated workload of the person attending the classes: participation in classes 30h (1 ECTS), ongoing preparation for classes 90h (3 ECTS), preparation for the exam 30h (1 ECTS). Total 5 ECTS.
The use of artificial intelligence tools in written work is stipulated by the provisions of § 3 and 4 of Resolution No. 98 of the University Education Council dated December 8, 2023. It is forbidden to use artificial intelligence systems for generating materials for a credit project and for its development (including on the linguistic side).
