(in Polish) Transnational Jewish Histories 2900-JSM-K1-TJH
Historians are constantly updating how we interpret sources, periods, and events. There have been several so-called turns over the decades all which point to new ways scholars are interpreting their subjects. It is this context of ever-changing methodologies, we will explore a recent “turn” that has been affecting historical inquiry over the past couple of decades: the transnational turn. To explore this approach, we will focus on texts related to global Jewish history. We will explore historiographical debates over the transnational turn and explore works that ask whether this mode of analysis can be applied to the study of Jewish history. One could ask, “Isn’t all of Jewish history transnational?” So, perhaps this “turn” is not that new in Jewish history. Or maybe it is?
This course explores global Jewish history through a transnational lens. We will read articles and chapters that will urge us to reconcile with the transnational approach to history and ask whether or not this is indeed a helpful way to study Jewish history. Each week, we will read works of historiography or European or American Jewish history. The expectation of this class is that you show up to class having already read the assigned reading for that week. This is a discussion seminar class, and your evaluation will be based on how you contribute to the conversation each week.
