Archaeology and culture of the the Central European towns in medieval and early modern periods 2800-DW-ARIKU
The lecture will be devoted to the problem of urban centres establishment and growth at the Baltic
Sea coast in the period of Hanseatic League domination. The issue of sovereign structures formation
and internal colonization will be an introduction issue to this subject matter. On this background,
development of Baltic zone within the European economy, structure of trade and main town centres
will be presented. Descriptions of the most important urban centres will be outlined based on the
results of historical and archaeological investigations. The last part of the lecture will characterize
changes in political situation in the 15 th and 16 th ct. as an indicator of transformations in the economic
situation of this region.
