Library Organization and management 2700-P2OZB-PSB
The lecture is designed to:
• familiarize students with basic information about: what is management;
• present the development of organization and management in a historical perspective;
• introduce various management functions: planning, organizing; personnel functions, directing and management of human potential in the organization; participative management and principles of Total Quality Management; problems of organizational culture in libraries;
• bring students into contact with: mission, goals and objectives for libraries; the scope of library planning; basic methods and techniques that are important in the planning process;
• present classifications of organizations; special organizational characteristics of libraries; specializations in libraries (horizontal specialization and vertical differentiation), types of organizations and organizational charts (based on hierarchical and functional concepts);
• familiarize students with problems related to the management of human resources (from planning through recruitment to job evaluation, compensation and development of employees);
• introduce the human element of the organization; some of the best known theories explaining human motivation; problems of leadership;
• familiarize students with participative management, principles of TQM and with the problems of library quality and effectiveness;
• present problems of organizational culture as a key factor in management associated either directly or indirectly with the effectiveness of the institution.

KNOWLEDGE
1.Has general knowledge in the field of organization and management.
2.Has systematic detailed knowledge connected with various functions and methods implemented in the field of organization and management. Knows and understands problems concerning planning processes, organizing, staffing, directing , principles of control and basic theories of motivation and leadership.
3.Knows and understands basic concepts and rules concerning organization and management which are applied in library and information activities.
4.Knows and understands problems concerning quality management (eg. TQM).
SKILLS
The student is able to:
1. indicate factors and steps in the library planning process;
2. understand the usefulness of time management;
3. use appropriate techniques and methods for the library planning process, organizing, staffing, directing and control;
4. point out special organizational characteristics of libraries as formal organizations; divide organization and indicate their characteristics; describe organizational structure; present specialization of libraries: horizontal specialization and vertical differentiation; prepare an organizational chart;
5. prepare an organizational framework for staffing (job description, job analysis and job evaluation)
6. characterize methods of performance appraisal
7. identify the principles of TQM
8. make practical implementation of techniques and methods useful in TQM
9. identify the dimensions of cultural organization of library

1.has awareness of the importance of organization and management for proper functioning of modern libraries.
2.is able to define correctly priorities in relation to the functions of organization and management
3.is able to understand the importance of organizational culture for the efficiency of library work.
4.is able to criticize the presented organizational solutions , problems and methods used in library management.
