The course covers the methodological and theoretical basis of library and information science with a special emphasise on the new modern research trends in this field. The course consists with three independent parts. In a given academic year three independent blocs of lectures are taught in order to present three chosen, the most current modern research trends in library and information science.

Knowledge:
Has deeper, systematic knowledge of the terminology and methodology of book and information science, especially referring to the newest modern research trends in library and information science.
Has deeper, systematic knowledge leading to specialization in the field of book and information science.
Has detailed knowledge of current developments, centres and research schools of book and information science.
Has detailed knowledge of selected contemporary developments within these scientific disciplines, which can serve as a point of reference for library and information practice.
Skills:
Has deeper research skills, encompassing the analysis of works of other authors, synthesizing of various ideas and views, choice of methods and constructing of research tools, working out and presenting of results, which enable original solving of complex issues from the realm of book and information science and other scientific disciplines, proper for information and library science.
Is capable of independent learning and widening own research skills.
Has the ability to integrate knowledge from various disciplines in the field of the humanities and its application in untypical professional situations related to the performed job of librarian or information specialist.
Is capable of formulating critical opinions about various types of documents on the basis of scientific knowledge from the realm of book and information science and has the abilities to present critical analyses in different form and with the help of various media.

Is capable of cooperation and team-work, performing various roles is such activities.
Is capable of appropriate distinction of priorities in the process of realization tasks set for himself and others, related to library and information theory.

Assessment criteria
The course is compulsory and the attandance in each part of the course is evaluated separately. Each lecturer will define a separate evaluation conditions.

Besides the classic literature on the subject (like by Krzysztof Migoń and Maria Dembowska) - chosen papers are recomended from the professional journals covering changes taking place in library and information science and discribing modern trends and topics which are or will be important. Readings are recomended currently acording to the topic discussed.
