Theory of mass communication 2700-M-DM-Z3TKMA-DZI
Using an interdisciplinary conceptual apparatus and the different epistemological perspectives there will be presented the main factors influencing the functioning of mass media and journalists working in them, how to construct communications journalism, broadcasting institutions and the types of conduct and the effects of acts of communication between journalists, broadcasting institutions, and different groups of customers and society. Each thematic block will be incorporated into the basic theoretical orientations and models that provide the core media knowledge. More detail will be included in the subject role of the media and the political and economic subsystem, as well as short-and long-term effects of the media.

After completion of the course (lecture and exercises), student:
KNOWLEDGE
1. knows what it is discourse and what is the role of different formulas and conventions quality in the construction of communications, describing reality, expressing emotion and decoding messages critical for various audiences
2. knows the main features differentiating the various types of communication in society and their corresponding media and communication channels,
3. knows the basic theories explaining the role of self-presentation and design of own identity through a variety of communication behaviors in different situations and communication systems,
4. knows how to shape the dynamics of interaction and community building in the processes of communication within interpersonal relationships and group relations,
5. knows the specifics of network communication and technologies of digital media and the changing nature of relationships between different participants that exchange information on the network,
6. knows what is the place and role in the functioning of mass media in the modern social system,
7. knows the most important theories of media effects, media use and the impact of media on interaction and social environment.
SKILLS
1. can recognize the sender's intentions, the factors and circumstances conditioning its action, overt and hidden contents of communications, ambiguity and multi-level structure of text, the relationship between text and context, attitudes and reactions of different audiences, possible and probable effects of different messages in different social reference systems; student is able to analyze the discursive mechanisms of action, and deconstruct the importance of particular communication behaviors
5. can reconstruct "mental models," sender, patterns of interaction, communication "forced" by the communicators, different forms of symbolic power exercised by the media telemetry studies;
7. know how to explain the conditions, processes and consequences of communication at the micro level (interpersonal interactions), medium (Interactions in small groups) and macro (mass communication in social system), and changes in communication processes resulting from the development of a network society (Internet, convergence of media, multimedia).

Assessment criteria
1. The lecture on the theory of mass communication ends with a written
exam in the form of a single-choice test conducted on the COME
platform
