Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student:
in terms of knowledge:
- discusses the methods and terminology of operations management and indicates which question a given method answers and what it does not resolve (K_W01)
- explains how an organisation's operating system works: capacity, resource utilisation, flow, inventory and their link to financial performance (K_W02)
in terms of skills:
- applies the basic methods of operations management: capacity utilisation and Little's law, the critical path, ABC classification, economic order quantity, safety stock and the reorder point, material requirements planning, Pareto analysis, SERVQUAL (K_U01)
- interprets operational phenomena: seasonality and unevenness of demand, the effects of resource overload, supply chain disruptions, divergence between quality measures (K_U02)
- prepares and presents an analysis of an operational problem together with a recommendation, stating the assumptions adopted and defending the result in discussion (K_U05)
- works in a team on a multi-stage case study analysis, sharing responsibility for individual parts of the solution (K_U07)
in terms of social competences:
- critically assesses operational decisions taken in an organisation, distinguishing a calculation error from a difference in assumptions (K_K01)
- thinks and acts entrepreneurially, recognising the mechanism of deferring decisions that carry a cost today and a benefit in the more distant future (K_K04 – delivered through the lecture and the examination)
- takes into account ethical standards and responsibility towards the customer, the regulator and the wider environment in decisions on suppliers and quality (K_K05)
Assessment criteria
The final grade will be based on results of assignments submitted throughout the semester in the course of seminar (50%) and exam test (50%). Specific assignments will include individual and team assignments. Each assignment will need to be handed over based on strictly determined time and format, defined during the class (no deadline extensions will be granted – failure to submit an assignment results in the loss of available points). Students, who fail to collect 50% of points for the assignments, fail the class (grade 2) in the first exam session.
The examination consists of questions on the course material, primarily on the lecture.
