Term 2025:
The course will cover the principles of first aid in terms of a full clinical examination, checking the animal's normal vital functions, performing practical cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a phantom, stopping bleeding and learning how to apply dressings correctly. Based on specific clinical cases, burns and frostbite will be discussed, as well as the procedure for heat stroke, convulsions, poisoning and bites. The course also covers the types and causes of convulsions and the procedure for epilepsy in dogs and cats. Students will have to recognize the type of disorder and implement the appropriate procedure based on the cases of emergencies presented in the films. In addition, the scope of the course also includes working with the owner of the injured animal, depending on the emergency. |

Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE
The student knows the basic concepts of animal emergency medicine, understands the mechanism of their occurrence. Knows the procedures in situations threatening the health of dogs and cats, knows the basic over-the-counter pharmacological agents, understands their purpose.
SKILLS
The student is able to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, bandage wounds and stabilize fractures. Knows which over-the-counter pharmacological agents to administer, in what situations. Is able to use appropriate grips in choking cases.
SOCIAL COMPETENCES
The student is ready to help animals and their caregivers. Is able to communicate appropriately with the animal owner, involving them in help.
