Autobiographical Memory 2500-PL-PS-SP300-05

"The course addresses selected topics related to personal past memory, i.e., autobiographical memory. We will examine how autobiographical memory differs from other memory systems, review theoretical models and empirical methods, and analyze memory distortions and their theoretical explanations. We will consider why we recall memories and the role of emotions and phenomenology in recollection. Individual and developmental differences in autobiographical memory will be explored from cognitive and socio-emotional perspectives. The course will also cover autobiographical memory functioning in selected mental disorders and therapeutic interventions that utilize autobiographical recall and life review techniques.

Classes will include individual and small group exercises—mini experiments that illustrate discussed phenomena and consolidate theoretical models. We will also discuss selected literature and evaluate existing methods and tools for studying autobiographical memory. Most sessions will begin with a quiz on material from previous classes and selected literature. The course concludes with a written exam and student presentations of a recent empirical study on autobiographical memory."
