The Science of Animal Behavior: From Mechanisms to Cognition
This course offers an interdisciplinary expansion of knowledge on the evolutionary and neurobiological foundations of behavior. The course begins with Tinbergen's classic four questions and moves on to contemporary issues in behavioral genetics, epigenetics, and the factors that differentiate observed behaviors. Particular emphasis is placed on comparative psychology: the program covers cognitive processes, self-awareness, theory of mind, and the evolution of emotions in animals. We will analyze the biological roots of social behavior, including cooperation and a sense of fairness, as well as forms of communication in primates and cetaceans, and ultrasonic vocalizations in rats. A key element of the course is a critical analysis of scientific methodology. We will learn modern laboratory techniques (e.g., optogenetics) and address the issue of the validity of animal models in the study of human diseases. We will critically discuss the rigorous application of the scientific method and the pitfalls of statistical analysis. The proposed program also addresses ethical dilemmas in animal research and nature conservation. A highlight of the course is a visit to a rodent research laboratory, allowing for a behind-the-scenes look at the specifics of animal research.

This course offers an evolutionary and neurobiological perspective on the sources of observed differences in animal behavior, covering topics such as cognitive processes, emotions, self-awareness, and theory of mind. The program teaches a critical approach to science by analyzing methodological flaws and assessing the usefulness of animal models of human disease. The course introduces modern research methods (including optogenetics), and the theoretical knowledge acquired can be expanded during a visit to a professional laboratory specializing in rat and mouse behavior."
