Term 2025L:

"The seminar aims to show how psychological categories and models (social influence,
conformity and nonconformity, scapegoat theory, frustration–aggression and the “quest for
significance,” bystander vs. helper, collective memory, trauma—including intergenerational
trauma, CBOW) help explain individual decisions, group dynamics, and the “politics of
memory” in history.
The classes take the form of an analysis of historical case studies: Alexander the Great\s
decision at Hyphasis, Menocchio as a nonconformist, the “cat massacre” in 18th-century
Paris, the psychosocial consequences of World War II and the war in Ukraine, the attitudes of witnesses to the Holocaust, sexual violence in war and children born because of war, the
dispute over the memory of Jedwabne, the inheritance of trauma, rebellion and systemic
change (Solidarity, the Round Table), dark tourism (Rwanda/Cambodia), and post-conflict
society management (Bosnia and Herzegovina or Rwanda).
The classes are designed to draw attention to the historical determinants of social behavior
and one's own positionality in conducting research (by reflecting on one's position in society
resulting from, among other things, gender, “race,” or socioeconomic status).
The classes are seminar-based: the lecture part is kept to a minimum, and participants shape
the discussion under the moderation of the instructors.
This course is interdisciplinary and aims to draw attention to the usefulness of cooperation
between various social sciences and humanities disciplines in explaining reality."

Prerequisites (description)

(in Polish) "Preferowane ukończenie kursu z psychologii społecznej (choć nie jest to konieczne); znajomość języka angielskiego umożliwiająca czytanie tekstów naukowych; wymagana jest systematyczna lektura tekstów i chęć dyskutowania o nich."

"Wiedza:
K_W01 Knows the specifics of the scientific language of psychology. Has in-depth
knowledge of the differences in methods and concepts used in psychology and related
sciences. Knows the connections between psychology and these sciences.
K_W10 Knows and understands at an in-depth level the mechanisms and regularities
governing human functioning in a social context.
K_W12 Knows classical and modern methods of measuring and analyzing psychological
properties.
Umiejętności:
K_U04 Student is able to analyze scientific research results using appropriate methods and
tools.
K_U05 Student is able to critically analyze and evaluate scientific research results, verify
their popular science discussions and practical applications of psychological knowledge.
K_U06 Student is able to communicate scientific research results orally and in writing, using
modern methods of presentation.
