Applying artificial intelligence tools in psychology 2500-PL-PS-FO-35

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a useful tool in various fields, including psychology. As AI continues to evolve, understanding its future directions, challenges, and opportunities becomes crucial. The aim of this course is to provide psychology students with a comprehensive overview of AI applications and to equip them with the knowledge necessary to use these technologies responsibly and innovatively. AI offers opportunities to better understand human behavior, improve psychological research, and improve therapeutic practices. At the same time, it brings many new threats for science, healthcare, education etc. The course is designed for psychology students and its aim is to explain the basics of AI and its applications in research and practice. No advanced mathematical knowledge is required, making this course accessible to people with basic knowledge of psychology and an interest in AI. However, for some topics, basic programming skills in Python and knowledge of basic statistics and methodology are recommended.
The course covers topics ranging from the mathematical foundations of machine learning and neural networks to ethical considerations related to the use of AI in various contexts. Students will learn practical examples of how generative models such as GPT can be used and how AI can help analyze psychological data, including understanding various aspects of human behavior. The role of AI in clinical psychology will also be discussed. Participants will also learn and test tools supporting the scientific publication process.
Attendance at classes is mandatory. The course will include informative and conversational lectures, and practical exercises during which students will apply artificial intelligence tools to psychological data, developing practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge. To successfully complete the subject, participants will be required to complete one AI-based project relevant to psychology research or practice. The final grade will be determined by the level of understanding of the issues discussed, as well as the ability to practically apply artificial intelligence.
