Term 2023Z:

The course will be a preparation for conducting research (questionnaires and experiments) using Qualtrics, Google Forms, PsychoPy and Gorilla platforms. Students will learn the basics of research methodology - especially in terms of comparing the specifics of all platforms, as well as stationary and online measurement. The classes will gradually introduce the participants to the subject of conducting the research, starting from discussing the process of searching for a topic, reviewing the literature (with an emphasis on tools that help to facilitate and organize this process), through designing the study, to conducting it.
In the first block, the participants will learn about the most important functions of the platforms that primarily enable the preparation of questionnaire surveys: Qualtrics and Google Forms. Gradually, more and more complex research procedures will be discussed, which can be prepared primarily in Qualtrics (randomization, conditional display of research types, embedded data, code modifications).
In the second block, students will have the opportunity to learn about platforms designed primarily for preparing and conducting experiments, such as PsychoPy and Gorilla. They will be presented with the specificity of experimental research (especially conducted via the Internet) and the possibilities of creating various procedures and including various measurement methods in Gorilla and PsychoPy.
Throughout the course, the participants will be acquainted with the specificity of research conducted in various paradigms - with their disadvantages, advantages and the most important elements that are worth paying attention to. Through exercises during the course and homework assignments during the semester, they will also have the opportunity to build research (or parts of it) on all platforms discussed. The classes will end with the preparation of a short research project on any topic, using specific functions of various platforms (including, for example, redirecting respondents between platforms).

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:
Students broaden their knowledge in the field of conducting research - usage of various methods and paradigms; they know the advantages and disadvantages of different measurement methods. They know which elements of the study to pay attention to and how to prepare them correctly, with care for the well-being of the participants, reliability of the measurement and high quality of the data obtained.
Skills:
Students are able to prepare complex procedures (with many conditions, randomization, several measurements) on Qualtrics, Google Forms, PsychoPy and Gorilla platforms. They know how to choose the right tool and method of measurement (type of question, indicator) for research questions and the specificity of the research.
Social competence:
Students are able to conduct the study in the sense of taking care of the examined person during it (in stationary and online procedures). They take into account the well-being of the subjects and are able to take care of it in their own research.
