Prerequisites (description)
Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
Students broaden their knowledge about the affective phenomena; they know the differences between various approaches to the classification and description of emotions. They are able to give examples of theoretical models describing emotions in the categorical and dimensional approach; they can compare them, critically pointing their advantages and disadvantages. They understand the relations between the theories and tools to measure affective states. They are familiar with specific affective phenomena: ambivalence and ambiguity, dual system theories, dimensions of morality, sociality and locus of causation in emotions. They know and understand the statistical methods, used in studying the affect and in the process of creating and validating the psychometric tools (factor analysis, regression analysis, clustering analysis, reliability analyses).
Skills:
Students learn different methods of measuring and eliciting emotions (questionnaires, experimental methods); they know how to use them (apply them in the research procedure, analyze and interpret their outcomes) whilst designing and conducting their own research in the field of psychology of emotions. They can also perform, analyze and interpret factor analyses, regression analyses, clustering analysis and reliability analyses. They can come up with their own ideas in the field of psychology of emotions.
Social competencies:
Students are able to recognize and describe affective phenomena in everyday life. They can describe emotions in various ways, have a critical approach to the different theoretical models, know their advantages and limitations, and can give examples of models deriving from those theories. During the practical block of the course, students improve their skills in cooperation while conducting research in both small and larger groups (e.g. preparing the study materials, recruiting the participants, gathering the data) and presenting their own research ideas in front of the group.
