The development of financial and banking institutions in preindustrial European economy (14th -17th century).
The origins of modern banking systems in 19th century: the central banking, the commercial banking, the no-banking institutions (co-operative). The British (Anglo-Saxon) banking system, the continental (German) banking system, the banking system in US and Japan.
The Polish banking system: emergence, development, regulatory framework (historical and economic determinants); variation in banking structures.
The banking system in interwar period (Poland and other countries). The crisis of private banking sector. The banking policy (US, Germany, Poland). Non-banking deposits institutions: the origins, scope of operations, role in the banking systems.
The commercial banks (20th century): models (composition), scope of operations, direction of changes, stability and security, influence on economy. Banking services and its historical development.
The central bank: emergence, development, relationship between banks and the state. The monetary policy of central banking (20th century).
The impact of economic crisis on banking systems: the determinants, influence on economy and the banking system composition; the relationship between banks and the state.

KNOWLEDGE
Upon completing the course a student understands the process of forming of the banking systems. Knows and understands the mechanisms, composition, growth and fluctuations of the financial institutions and process of changes in commercial banking. Knows the legal and regulatory framework of the money market and it instruments.

COMPETENCES
Student is able to explain the influence of economic changes on the character and functions of financial institutions as well as the importance of these institutions for the development of the economies. Student should perceive banking as products of the epoch, their form being determined on the one hand by history and on the other by current economic and institutional conditions. Student is able to find historical origins of the dissimilarities of banking systems in the countries of the modern world. Student should be able to critically analyze sources, positions of different authors, prerequisites and arguments, interpret and formulate independent conclusions.

The student are expected to prepare a thesis.
