Business Intelligence in Power BI in Business Practice 2400-ZEWW932
The course is dedicated to data analysts and those involved in preparing analysis and data visualization. The course topics include familiarizing Participants with the Power BI Desktop program. It is the most widely used Business Intelligence program in companies. During the course you will learn how to easily import various data sources and perform the necessary transformations and data connections. You will learn how to easily and intuitively create interactive dashboards that can be refreshed in real time. The Business Analyst in Power BI course will provide you with new skills for working with data and increase your competitiveness in the job market! During the course, we start discussing working in Power BI Desktop from scratch, so prior knowledge of the program is not required.
Familiarity with Business Intelligence programs is an extension of professional competence for those who process and visualize data. Power BI Desktop is an intuitive program that is a natural step towards interactive reports and is an ideal continuation of gaining skills in the area of data analysis, among others, for people who started their adventure with working with data with Microsoft Excel (including completing the Dashboards and Power Excel tools course).
Course topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Automating Data Import and Transformation using Power Query:
- Importing different types of data files (MS Excel workbooks, test files, csv files) and loading data from folders.
- Data transformations and transformations with different types of variables (including operations on numbers, texts and dates).
- Defining custom columns and conditional columns.
- Automation of data import and transformation.
- Filtering and sorting, swapping values, grouping, transposing, rearranging data.
- Merging and appending data.
2 Creating a data model:
- Creating a data model using relationships. Learning the concept of quick measures.
- Basics of DAX language - creating self-defined calculation columns and measures using the following functions, among others: CALENDAR, RELATED, DATESINPERIOD, DATEADD, CALCULATE, DATESYTD, ALL, SUMX, FILTER.
3 Data visualizations and report construction:
- Creation of interactive reports including different types of charts, including line chart, column chart, point chart, cascade chart, funnel chart, tree map, meter, key performance indicator, card or heat map.
- Geographic data visualization - creating a map, shape map and cartogram.
- Filtering reports on different levels - visualization, page and whole report.
- Using interactions between visual elements. Learning about detailed viewing options.
- Using what-if parameters.
- Using different types of conditional formatting.

Note 2: the course is part of the educational path "Analytical dashboards using Business Intelligence tools", upon completion of which participants receive a certificate. Details on the WNE UW website (Student> Educational Paths).
Note 3: It is possible to take the courses "Business Intelligence in Power BI in Business Practice" and "Business Intelligence in Tableau in Business Practice" in one semester. Both courses consist of 6 blocks of 5 teaching hours each and will be implemented one after the other. The "Power BI ..." course by the end of March, and the "Tableau ..." course from the beginning of April.
Note 4: The software version in the course is Microsoft Office 2021 or later (language version: Polish, operating system: Windows). Using an earlier version is possible, but it may cause some difficulties. The English language version is not a major problem, but the course a different operating system is (e.g. MacOS) due to the limitations of the Office suite (possible lack of necessary software components). The University of Warsaw does not provide participants with the necessary computer hardware or software.

The learner has acquired the ability to comprehensively analyze data and create reports in Power BI Desktop. You will be able to use the program to automate the process of importing data, preparing it for creating reports, and creating data visualizations in accordance with the latest trends in the area of business analytics (Business Intelligence). You will be able to leave your Excel reports in favor of interactive reports in Power BI.
