Does It Pay to Invest In Human Capital? Theory and Empirical Evidence 2400-ZEWW754
The aim of the seminar is to acquaint students with the theory and the results of empirical research, which are related to the effects of investing in competencies, including their impact on economic activity, career development and earnings.
The classes will take the form of lectures combined with discussions on the following topics:
1) Human capital - what it is, how it is formed, and how it can be measured?
2) Theoretical basis of the functioning of the labor market in the context of investing in human capital.
3) The basic methods of measurement of the effects of investing in competences.
4) Parental and the environmental investments in the child's skills.
5) Investments in competences through formal education.
6) Studying abroad as an investment in human capital.
7) Investments in competences through non-formal and informal education.
8) Investments in competences through professional work.
9) Investments in health.
10) Migrations as a form of investment in human capital.
In addition, during the course students will prepare and present their essay being in line with the topics discussed (theoretical or empirical).
Participation in the seminar can also be treated as an introduction to the Bachelor's or Master’s seminar being in line with the discussed topics.

After this course the student:
1) is familiar with the basic economic theories on investing in human capital,
2) knows the basic methods for testing the effects of investment in human capital on the individual’s situation in the labor market,
3) is familiar with the results of empirical research on the key topics of the seminar.

Assessment criteria
The credit will be given on the condition of preparing and presenting an essay being in line with the topics (theoretical or empirical) discussed during the seminar (100%).
Bibliography
A selection of empirical literature on the topic discussed during the seminar will be provided to students at the begining of the course.
