Open economy: the role of exchange rate 2400-PL3SL211A
The seminar is designed to prepare the students to formulate the research problem and the BA thesis. The initial classes are devoted to discussing the structure of the BA thesis, as well as the potential topics of the BA thesis. The participants will present the given papers that cover the main topics in international economics, with a particular emphasis on the role of the currency exchange rate and exchange rate regimes. During the subsequent meetings, the outline of the BA thesis, main research questions, and outlines of all chapters to be included in the BA thesis will be discussed. Students are expected to give the presentation on basic theories referring to the subject of the thesis, conclusions from previous empirical research and the results of their own empirical research.
In the first semester, regular meetings will take place each week or every two weeks, dependently on the number of students. In the second semester, regular individual meetings are foreseen.

- Exchange rate regimes impact on trade;
- Macroeconomic determinants of dollarization;
- Macroeconomic determinants of the safe haven status on the example of selected currencies;
- The impact of yen depreciation on exports of Japan;
- The impact of the 2008-2009 financial crisis on the currency risk management in Polish enterprises with a particular focus on derivatives;
- Exchange rate pass-through to the import prices in Poland in 2004-2012;
- The influence of the exchange rate regime on the 2007 - 2010 financial crisis : the case of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia;
- The informational efficiency of the polish exchange rate market regarding Euro and Swiss Franc rates.

After completing the seminar, the student:

- knows the main theoretical models and results of empirical studies regarding functioning of the foreign exchange market and the role of exchange rate in the open economy on the intermediate level;
- knows the principles of academic writing and respecting the requirements of copyright.

- can formulate a research problem,
- is able to develop and present the results of the conducted research,
- is able to present the research problem in public, discuss its source, significance and results of previous research, and to discuss the conclusions from these studies,
- knows that the analysed phenomenon should be explained on theoretical grounds and is able to carry out such an analysis in the context of the BA thesis,
- understands the need to adapt the empirical method to the nature of the tested hypothesis, as well as available empirical data.

- knows the importance of systematic work and of the need for planning in the long-term perspective,
- is able to discuss his/her opinion within the group and support his/hers opinions with empirical examples.
Assessment criteria
Assessment of the first semester: students will be asked to present on article chosen by the tutor and report progress with writing their BA thesis (the outline of the BA thesis, at list one written chapter of the thesis).
Assessment of the second semester: submission of the BA thesis.
