Economics of Education 2400-M2EDU
The seminar is intended for students interested in issues in the field of education economics, including the determinants of the choice of the educational path and the impact of education on the situation of individuals in the labour market (economic activity, earnings).
The aim of the seminar is to acquaint students with the theory and the results of empirical research in this area.
The class takes the form of a lecture and a presentation of empirical findings combined with a discussion on the following topics:
1. Education as a form of investment in human capital
2. Theories explaining the reasons and effects of studying
3. Methods of measuring of the effects of education
4. Educational production function
5. Systems of education in other countries
6. Determinants of choosing an educational track
7. Parental investment in the child’s skills
8. Formal education
9. Evidence from evaluation of education reforms
10. Studying abroad
11. Non-formal education
12. Informal education
13. Cognitive and non-cognitive skills
Students are expected to prepare and give a presentation in front of the group on the results of a selected empirical study on one of the above topics.

Learning outcomes
After this course the student is familiar with:
1) basic theories that explain investing in education and its effects,
2) basic methods of measuring the effects of education,
3) results of key empirical research on determinants and outcomes of education.
Assessment criteria
The basis for the pass mark are:
1) examination in the form of a test (50%),
2) presentation of a selected scientific article (40%),
3) activity in class (10%).
Bibliography
A selection of empirical literature on the topic discussed during the seminar will be provided to students at the beginning of the course.
