May the Force (of methods) be with You: classical and spatial methods in econometric modelling 2400-ENSM114B
The aim of the seminar is to prepare a master thesis using quantitative methods (statistics/classical or spatial econometrics) to study economic phenomena. An important element of the thesis will be an appropriately selected research methodology. If chosen research methods lye outside the scope of the study program, I will endeavour to supplement the student's knowledge to the extent necessary to write a master thesis.
The seminar DOES NOT COVER macroeconomic or financial topics (with the exception of theses using time series analysis: ARIMA models, ECM, etc.), theses in the field of international trade, or theses that involve data collection through surveys. The topic of the thesis will be selected taking into account the above guidelines, in accordance with the student's research interests.
The master thesis may be written in the form of a scientific article and may serve as a starting point for doctoral studies application.
The seminar lasts three semesters. In the first semester, the student presents an outline of the topic, collects data and formulates research questions. In the second semester, student works on the outline of the thesis, conducts a preliminary analysis of the data and reviews the literature on the subject. In the third semester, student conducts the research and finalizes the master thesis.
The first few classes are devoted to discussing research methods, ways of data collection and example research papers. Once the topic has been chosen, the classes take the form of individual consultations with students. Once a month, progress in the work is verified (in person or remotely).
The preferred programming language is R.

Learning outcomes
After completing the seminar, the student:
- is able to collect data for research;
- is able to analyse data for research;
- is able to formulate hypotheses/research questions;
- is able to select literature for their own research;
- is able to critically assess the current state of knowledge based on the literature on the subject;
- is able to explain the significance of the economic problem chosen for research;
- is able to select the appropriate research tool for the chosen economic problem;
- is able to conduct quantitative research;
- is able to draw conclusions based on the research conducted and, if necessary, propose further research directions.

In the third semester, student conducts the research and finalizes the master thesis.
The first semester is completed on the basis of the presented work plan, collected data and research questions.
The second semester is completed on the basis of the presentation of the thesis outline, preliminary research results and a review of the literature.
The third semester is completed on the basis of the written master thesis.
