Teacher education. Contemporary challenges 2300-OTR-TECC
Translatorium focuses on the issues of teacher education and its challenges, in Poland and selected countries. Teacher education is an important field for research, since the quality of teacher education has been regularly questioned by European governments. At the same time teacher quality is increasingly seen as crucial to improving pupils' educational achievements.
The course allows students to develop their language and analytical competences. These competences lays the foundation for the development of the the ablility to translate texts.
During the classes students will work - individually and in groups - on the texts in English. Particular emphasis will be placed on discussions about the most common views on teacher education and its challenges, which will contribute to shaping the students' ability to construct justifications for their own opinions.
The course allows students to become familiar with the terminology that plays a significant role in considerations on teacher education. Students will have the opportunity to acquire knowledge on the issues as follow: teacher, teaching profession, teacher education at the level of higher education and professional development of teachers.
During the course discussions will be focused on the following topics:
1. To be a teacher?
2. The Importance of teaching profession.
3. Teaching profession in Europe and its dimensions.
4. Supporting the teaching profession in Europe - key actions.
5. Initial teacher education and support for beginning teachers: contemporary challenges.
6. Continuing professional development of teachers: contemporary challenges.
7. The future of teaching profession and teacher education.
The course will contribute to the development of the ability to work in groups and engage in co-operation with others. It will contribute to the development of the needs of learning and improving students' professional competencies, especially by developing language proficiency in issues related to teacher education and its challenges.

Student will obtain the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge:
- will become familiar with the terminology that plays a significant role in considerations on teacher education,
- will have structured knowledge on the issues as follow: teacher, teaching profession, teacher education and teacher professional development in Poland and other countries.
Skills:
- will develop skills in the mining and summary of the main informations of the analyzed texts;
- will have the ability to construct complex oral and written justifications to the issues of teacher education and its contemporary challenges, regarding achievements of theory of education and educational policy.
Social competencies:
- will develop his/her capacity to work in groups and engage in co-operation with others;
- will be able to recognize the need for continuous learning and developing professional competencies, in particular by improving language proficiency in issues related to teacher education and its challenges.
Assessment criteria
The condtion of passing the course is to obtain the expected learning outcomes.
The learning outcomes will be verified by evaluating:
1) Students' participation in the ongoing activities, with particular attention to: (i) preparation for classes, (ii) active participation in the discussions and in the work on the translation of texts, and (iii) active participation in group work on joint translation and compilation of summaries of the analyzed texts.
2) Students' written work on the theme of chosen aspects of teacher eduaction and its challenges.
