Cultural anthropology 2300-NPK-AK
The aim of the Cultural Anthropology course is to familiarize students with the basic concepts and categories of cultural analysis, as well as current cultural phenomena. Particular attention will be paid to the forms of participation in culture by children and young people, their significance for shaping the ways of thinking and acting and their perception of the surrounding reality. Children and young people are at the same time creators of culture, its participants and recipients of cultural messages directed to them by adults. During the course, cultural practices related to childhood and youth, their evolution and role, both in individual life and in peer relations, will also be presented. The following issues will be discussed during the course:
- Introduction to cultural anthropology - What is culture?
- Supermarket of culture - on the social construction of identity
- Culture created for children and by children. Children and youth as creators, participants and recipients of culture
- Intergenerational relations in different types of cultures
- Individualism, social atomization, loneliness – as problems in contemporary culture
- Media and changes in contemporary culture
- “Time” as a cultural category – contemporary changes in the perception of time
- Play as a source of culture
- Toy and its functions
- Children’s folklore and its use in contemporary cultural texts
- Literary initiations and animation of children’s reading
- Youth and youth subcultures
- e-communication of children and youth – generational changes
- Youth slang as the language of a social group and its presence in public discourse

Learning outcomes
In terms of knowledge, the student knows and understands:
- basic terminology of cultural sciences,
- important issues of anthropological reflection, research areas and fields of cultural interpretation,
- selected issues related to participation in culture by children and youth
- mechanisms guiding social behavior,
- selected cultural phenomena, in particular those involving children and youth,

In terms of skills, the student is able to:
- read with understanding anthropological texts and refer to them in their own reflection on cultural phenomena,
- analyze selected social phenomena and their cultural manifestations,
- conduct discussions using arguments based on the gathered theoretical knowledge from the area of cultural sciences and their own socio-cultural experiences,
- use the acquired knowledge to understand and diagnose observed problems and build reflection on cultural phenomena. -
In terms of social competences, the student:
- active participation in scientific and cultural life, related to broadly understood socio-cultural animation,
- critical evaluation of the knowledge possessed and the content received,
- adopting an attitude of respect and research curiosity towards various cultural phenomena,

- assessment of substantive activity during classes (two absences per semester are allowed)
- preparation of an introduction to the discussion
