The main aim of the Phonetics course is to familiarise students with the system and classification of sounds of the British variety of the English language (RP), distinguishing sounds by their length and quality, shaping correct pronunciation of vowels, consonants and diphthongs. By becoming familiar with the international phonetic alphabet, the student will be equipped with a tool for conscious control of different speech parameters during speech.
The course will enhance listening comprehension and fluency in English.
Classes are conducted in English.
The following issues will be discussed and practised during the classes:
- international phonetic alphabet;
- the features of vowels, diphthongs and consonants;
- distinguishing between vowel lengths;
- pronunciation of vowels, diphthongs and consonants;
- learning about the English accent and intonation system;
- exercises in producing and differentiating minimum pairs;
- reading phonetic transcription;
- constructing simple pronunciation exercises for early childhood education students.

Learning outcomes
In terms of knowledge the student knows and understands:
- basic concepts of the phonetics of the English language, such as, among others, the voice, minimum pair, syllable, diphthong, weak form, etc.;
- a system of vowels, consonants and diphthongs in English;
- types and sources of linguistic errors in pronunciation, taking into account similarities and differences in phonetics between English and Polish.
In terms of skills the student is able to:
- correctly produce vowels, consonants and diphthongs in the British variety of English (RP);
- read a phonetic transcription correctly;
- assess the pronunciation of words in the British version of the English language.
In terms of social skills the student is ready to:
- appreciate the importance of teaching correct pronunciation in early language education;
- construct simple pronunciation exercises for students in early childhood education themselves;
- integrate pronunciation exercises in the area of other language education issues for the child.
Assessment criteria
The assessment is based on
1) attendance (one absence allowed),,
2) preparation for classes and doing homework (exercises, assignments),
3) active participation in classes,
4) oral test at the end of the course.
