Qualitative data collection and analysis in social research 2300-MSPP-MET-K
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the issues of qualitative research, in particular to provide theoretical and practical knowledge on how to collect and analyze data. Classes are addressed to those who would like to develop their research skills in the field of interpretation of broadly understood cultural texts. During the course, students acquire knowledge about the structure and purposefulness of interviews in qualitative research, on how to use them and carry out practical exercises in their application. In the following parts of the course students learn about what participatory observation is, what is the history of this method and how it can be used in qualitative research. Students find out what are the different types of participant observation (ethnographic walk, observation, photo-session) and carry out their own observations. At the next stage, students will learn about other methods of qualitative research related to discourse analysis and visual analysis. Students learn about how to analyze material from existing sources (texts, press analysis) and visual materials. The final element of the course will be to show, at a basic level, how to analyze the data obtained using qualitative methods. The important elements of the course are that the students themselves check how the particular methods look in practice, by conducting interviews, observations, visual and discursive analyzes.
