MS3 - Theory of social action 2300-MS3-AKN-TD
During the course, students will be introduced to the concepts of social action in the field of sociology and social pedagogy and practical ways to implement them in local communities. They learn about the importance of local government institutions, non-governmental organizations and private institutions in the field informal education. The range of knowledge and practical skills acquired during the course will help to prepare - at a basic level - the leaders of social change in local communities.
Topics include:
- concepts of social action with particular emphasis on areas: education and culture;
- problems of managing social organizations;
- projects of social action;
- presentation and evaluation of social action projects concluded by students;
- service learning as an example of social activities;
- issues of social capital in Poland and in the world.
As part of the classes, students independently develop and then implement a project based on a selected concept of social action using the problem solving methods.
The first semester is devoted to exploring the subject, analyzing theoretical assumptions and detailed elaboration of the project. In the second semester, students implement the project independently and report monthly on its implementation.

Knowledge:
- Knows elementary terminology related to service learning and social capital.
- Characterizes the theoretical concepts of social action in the field of sociology and social pedagogy.
- He knows the basic theories of social capital.
- Knows in which areas of social activity selected methods of social activities can be applied and with what consequences it is associated with.
- He knows the current research results concerning the image of social capital in Poland and in the world and knows what the conditions are.
- Knows how to conduct a reliable diagnosis of the environment and the analysis of its problems and needs.
- Knows what ethical standards should be followed when implementing projects in the area of social activity.
Skills
- Observes and interprets social phenomena, analyzes their connections with various areas of animation and non-formal education.
- Independently searches for and critically analyzes source materials that are the basis for creating a project in accordance with the chosen method of social action.
- Has elementary research skills in the field of analyzing research examples, constructing and conducting research necessary to implement projects in the field of social activities; and is also able to formulate conclusions and indicate directions for further research.
- Analyzes a given local environment in terms of its social needs.
- Referring to the basic theoretical approaches, he prepares a project based on the assumptions of the selected method of social action, within which he analyzes, interprets and designs strategies and forecasts the effects of planned activities.
- He is actively involved in the implementation of the project.
- Works in a large team, taking on different roles in the group.
- Acts in an ethical manner and in accordance with social norms.
Competencies
- Is aware of the need to assume different roles in the team, can compromise in this aspect.
- Shows active and committed attitude in the implementation of the project.
- In difficult situations, he follows ethical standards and his attitude is professional.
- Responsibly carries out the assumed tasks.
Assessment criteria
The student is assessed on the basis of:
- involvement in the preparation of the project (participation in discussions, fulfillment of the assumed tasks) and the implementation and evaluation of the project;
- the number of tasks performed under the project;
- a prepared presentation on a selected topic - using workshop methods and activating the group;
- colloquium covering the theoretical knowledge of the subject.
