Module Psychological and Biomedical Foundations of Development and Education 2300-MPiB
The aim of this module is to provide students with basic knowledge of the psychological and biomedical foundations of development, upbringing, and education. During the module, students will learn: The stages and characteristics of biological and psychosocial development, as well as the mechanisms regulating maturation, learning, and human activity; Characteristics of developmental disorders and the most common health problems in children and adults; Theory of social perception and communication: social behavior and its determinants, interpersonal situations, empathy, assertive, aggressive, and submissive behavior; attitudes, stereotypes, and prejudices; negotiation and conflict resolution, rules of cooperation, group processes and roles; barriers and difficulties in communication, techniques and methods for improving communication, thinking and learning styles, and the mechanisms behind the formation of attitudes in children and adolescents. They will also become familiar with aspects related to the importance of self-reflection and self-development in the work of an educator/teacher, with particular emphasis on the following issues: identification and development of the educator/teacher’s own resources, individual strategies for coping with difficulties, the issue of stress and burnout among teachers, and the need to use feedback on one’s work.

Learning outcomes
In terms of knowledge, the student knows and understands:
K1_W04 - Normalities of human mental, physical, and social development, various styles of thinking, acting, and learning, and the methods of diagnosing and supporting development related to these, taking into account the specific functioning of individuals with special educational needs; principles of action in the prevention of addictions and other problems affecting children and youth.
K1_W05 - The specific functioning of the educational environment, formal and informal groups, group processes, group dynamics, social roles, interpersonal communication processes – particularly in the context of animation activities; methods of implementing the principle of inclusion and the resulting methods of diagnosing and supporting individual and group development in pedagogical practice.
K1_W11 - Basics of speech functioning and pathologies, principles of voice production, basics of vision and balance.
In terms of skills, the student is able to:
K1_U01 - Analyze theories and related concepts in pedagogy, with particular emphasis on alternative education and socio-cultural animation. K1_U02 - Prepare a project in the area of alternative education and socio-cultural animation, adapted in terms of methodology and the needs of various social and age groups, based on observation and analysis of the target group; implement it according to the assumptions and conduct and prepare an evaluation.
K1_U03 - Analyze pedagogical achievements in the area of alternative education and socio-cultural animation and discover new educational paths, taking into account contemporary socio-cultural and psychological conditions, as well as civilizational changes.
K1_U07 - Recognize one's own preferences regarding thinking, acting, and learning, and plan one's professional development as a pedagogue, educator, socio-cultural animator, and alternative educator.
K1_U14 - Work in the educational and animation space with individuals with special educational needs, including those with adaptation difficulties related to migration experiences, coming from culturally diverse backgrounds, or with limited knowledge of the Polish language. In terms of social competences, the student is ready to:
K1_K01 - Critically evaluate their knowledge in the field of alternative education and socio-cultural animation, considering the dynamic development of pedagogy and its subdisciplines, which translates into the need for ongoing personal and professional development.
K1_K03 - Organize the local/educational environment using socio-cultural animation methods and taking into account the knowledge and experience of other entities in the educational process; collaborate with various entities in the field of alternative education and socio-cultural animation, and fulfill various roles in the project team.
Assessment criteria
A prerequisite for taking the exam is obtaining credits for all subjects included in the module. Students receive an average grade for all subjects in the module exam.
