MK - Child and family support systems 2300-MK-SW1
The lecture will address the systems of supporting children and families, transformation within the family as well as resultant chances and risks relating to children’s and adolescents’ development (demographic as well as socio-cultural situation, economic migration, the problem of addiction, poverty and social exclusion as well as chances connected with the development of family support services). The students will become familiar with the theoretical foundations of approaches oriented towards families and children. They will be presented with the latest state of research and main reports on the conditioning of parenthood and family support in the country and abroad. They will become familiar with social policy interventions for children and families in Poland and other selected countries, with the principles of family policy and instruments of family support. They will learn about the systems of child and family support in Poland and abroad, the tasks of social services as well as the profiles of institutions and non-governmental organisations working for children and families. They will have a possibility to become familiar with examples of initiatives supporting children, youth and the family in the local environment as well as programs oriented towards supporting families from “risk groups”.

Knowledge:
The students know and understand the transformations in family and resultant threat for the functioning of families and the development of children and adolescents
Know the state of contemporary research on the family and main domestic and international reports
Understand the basics of a family-based approach in theory and social practice
Know selected systems of family support as well as prevention and intervention programs in Poland and other selected countries
Skills:
The students can describe and critically analyse examples of activities for the child and the family offered by public institutions and non-governmental organisations
Can point to effective strategies and projects directed at children and families in the local environment as well as models of supporting families from “risk groups”
Social competences
The students understand the conditioning of parenthood in the modern world
The students are aware of the difficulties faced by contemporary families
The students are ready (within professional training) to undertake interventions activating children and families
Assessment criteria
A passing grade based on a written test at the end of the term (passing the course is a condition for being admitted to the module exam).
Written exam in the main module. The students are required to be able to integrate knowledge gained in the course of the module classes.
