Theoretical Foundations of Alternative Education 2300-MEA1-TPEA
The discussion class focuses on topics related to broadly understood alternative education. The issues addressed will include:
- the school in the local community and the school as an educational environment;
- groups and the processes associated with them;
- a comparison between system-based schools and non-system-based schools;
- new trends and the future of education.

Learning outcomes
In terms of knowledge, the student knows and understands:
the place of alternative education within the social sciences and humanities,
basic concepts in alternative education and the relationships between them,
fundamental theories in the field of alternative education,
the differences between informal, non-formal, and alternative education,
the formal and legal conditions for the functioning of institutions within alternative education,
the differences between the first, second, and third sectors, and the conditions for implementing alternative education within them,
the conditions for the creation and functioning of social groups, as well as the possibilities and limitations of working with them,
group processes, stages of group development, group roles, and leadership styles within groups,
current trends in education.
In terms of skills, the student is able to:
define basic concepts in alternative education and indicate the relationships and dependencies between them,
characterize selected issues in the field of alternative education and highlight the connections between them,
analyze the possibilities of implementing alternative education activities within specific social structures and institutions,
identify and describe examples of activities in the area of alternative education,
describe the stages of group development, assess which stage a given group is in, and choose the appropriate leadership style for that stage,
characterize different leadership roles: leader, facilitator, animator, and indicate the similarities and differences between them,
characterize group roles,
identify their most and least preferred roles within a group,
use various sources to gather information and actively seek ways to expand their knowledge and skills in alternative education.
In terms of social competencies, the student is ready to:
apply the acquired knowledge of the theoretical foundations of alternative education in practical activities,
critically assess their knowledge of alternative education and seek new sources of information in this field,
follow new trends in alternative education while maintaining a critical approach to them,
consciously and individually select methods of action suited to specific situations and social groups,
analyze their preferences regarding group roles.
