Module: Fundamentals of working with a person with intellectual disability 2300-J-PS-PNI
The module “Fundamentals of Working with Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities” introduces students to the principles of diagnosing, educating, and providing therapeutic and rehabilitative support to individuals with intellectual disabilities across various stages of life. The module includes content on multi-specialist psycho-pedagogical diagnosis, psychological foundations of therapy, augmentative and alternative communication, development of individualized educational-therapeutic programs, and methods for educational and therapeutic work. Special emphasis is placed on understanding the needs of individuals with multiple disabilities and their role in inclusive and integrative educational systems in Poland and abroad.
The module includes the following courses:
Multi-specialist psycho-pedagogical diagnosis of students with intellectual disabilities – lecture (15 hrs)
Augmentative and alternative communication – lecture (15 hrs)
Designing educational and therapeutic programs – lecture (15 hrs)
Educational and therapeutic methods in working with individuals with intellectual disabilities – workshop (15 hrs)
Education of children and youth with intellectual disabilities in Inclusive and integrative education systems – seminar (30 hrs)
Education and rehabilitation of individuals with multiple disabilities – seminar (30 hrs)

The student knows and understands:
- the fundamentals of multidisciplinary psycho-pedagogical assessment of students with intellectual disabilities, including methods for assessing educational needs and capabilities; K_W13
- the psychological foundations of therapy for individuals with intellectual disabilities and the principles of tailoring therapeutic actions to individual needs; K_W06
- the methods and tools of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), and their application in working with individuals with intellectual disabilities; K_W16
- the principles of constructing Individual Educational and Therapeutic Programs (IPET) in the context of individuals with intellectual disabilities; K_W12
- the educational and therapeutic methods used when working with individuals with intellectual disabilities, including in integrative and inclusive education systems; K_W17
- the educational and rehabilitative challenges of individuals with multiple disabilities, including psychophysical, social, and educational aspects; K_W09
- the role of integrative and inclusive education in the education systems in Poland and other countries, with a focus on individuals with intellectual disabilities; K_W18
Skills
The student is able to:
- conduct a multidisciplinary psycho-pedagogical diagnosis of students with intellectual disabilities, taking into account their specific developmental needs; K_U06
- apply augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) methods in working with individuals with intellectual disabilities, adapting them to individual needs; K_U07
- develop Individual Educational and Therapeutic Programs (IPET) tailored to the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities; K_U05
- apply a variety of educational and therapeutic methods in working with individuals with intellectual disabilities, considering their specific needs and abilities; K_U04
- support the inclusion of individuals with intellectual disabilities within integrative and inclusive education systems, creating favorable conditions for their educational and social development; K_U08

Assessment criteria
Written exam, after prior completion of all required components (attendance, quizzes) for each subject within the module, or based on the average grade from individual subjects.
