Module: Trends in contemporary special education pedagogy 2300-J-PS-MNWPS
The course will have an interdisciplinary character. Their main objective will be to encourage reflection on disability in the context of educational and social changes in Poland and worldwide. The primary goal will be to change the way disability is perceived, as this is a necessary catalyst for improving the social status of people with disabilities.
During the course, students will be introduced to the following thematic areas: disability discourses; models of disability (medical, social, bio-psycho-social, and civic) and their application in building support systems for people with disabilities; the significance of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for shaping social policy and pedagogical reflection; socio-cultural discourses shaping the identities of persons with disabilities; representations of disability; and an overview of disability studies.
The course will also explore the issues of upbringing and education of people with disabilities throughout history. Furthermore, it will consider the historical, cultural, socio-economic, and ideological contexts surrounding disability and people with disabilities, including adults, in different historical periods.
Basic issues related to the education of students with disabilities in various types of schools will also be discussed. The program will include topics concerning the role of the teacher of students with special educational needs (SEN) and their importance in upbringing, education, and work in diverse classrooms.

Knowledge: Student:
- knows the basic issues related to the psychosocial problems of people with disabilities and the factors influencing their social functioning in the classroom – K_W06
- has knowledge of the principles of co-organizing the education of students with special educational needs (SEN) and the role, competencies, and tasks of the supporting teacher/special education teacher in a diverse classroom – K_W14

Skills: Student is able to:
- correctly interpret the educational process of individuals with SEN and assess its significance – K_U06
- analyze the needs of people with disabilities and identify methods for supporting their education – K_U05
- understand and analyze changes in the approach to disability – K_U03
- apply theories from the field of special education in practice – K_U04
- interpret social processes and phenomena related to education – K_U09
Social competencies: Student is ready to:
- plan educational actions for people with disabilities in cooperation with teachers and specialists – K_K04
- design research related to the phenomenon of disability – K_K02
- adhere to ethical principles in pedagogical activities – K_K06
- predict the outcomes of pedagogical, didactic, educational, care, and therapeutic actions – K_K05
Assessment criteria
Written exam, after prior completion of all required components (attendance, quizzes) for each subject within the module, or based on the average grade from individual subjects.
