i. Diplomatic protocol; definitions, origin and content of the term.
ii. Historical development of diplomatic forms since the Middle Ages, Byzantine and Papal diplomacy, Renaissance and emergence of permanent diplomatic missions, Congress of Vienna, history of Polish diplomacy
iii. Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations. Diplomatic and consular privileges and immunities, types of immunity, duty to respect of the law of the receiving state and its abuse. Expulsion of a diplomat.
iv. Concept of precedence, state precedence, precedence in an international organization, ranks of heads of diplomatic missions and their precedence. Flag etiquette. Orders and decorations.
v. Diplomatic mission. Bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. Ambassador, head of mission and staff. Diplomatic representation. Accreditation of an ambassador. Ceremony of handover of credentials. Diplomatic passports, diplomatic cards.
vi. Visits as realization of foreign policy goals, types of visits, program and organization of an official visit of a head of state or chief of government, multilateral meetings, international summits and conferences
vii. Receptions as form of diplomatic work, types of receptions, types of tables and seating arrangement, table settings and cutlery, conduct at table, toasts, table service, wine. Menus, selection of dishes and wines. Dietary restrictions. Invitations.
viii. Diplomatic language and rules of communication. Verbal and non-verbal communication. Diplomatic correspondence, types of diplomatic letters, notification, netiquette or rules of electronic correspondence. Style in correspondence and in talk. Business cards.
ix. Everyday etiquette and savoir vivre, greetings, introducing, conversation, phone calls, meetings, gifts, flowers, outfits and accessories. Types of dresses and rules of their selection to the time and occasion. Recommendations of elegance. Definitions of types of dresses in diplomacy and business.

Student after completing the course
In terms of knowledge:
- has an in-depth knowledge of the changing role of diplomacy in the implementation of nation’s foreign policy requiring the evolution of its own methods, including techniques of diplomatic protocol [KW_02, [KW_04], [KW_05]
- has an understanding of the meaning of effective communication and appropriate behavior in interpersonal contacts, especially with the representatives of states in conditions of European integration and respecting cultural diversity [K_W03] [K_W04] [K_W08]
- acquires knowledge of the application of codified laws and customary rules that make up protocol and diplomatic etiquette in the member states and EU institutions [KW_01] [KW_05]
In terms of skills
- has the ability to understand the ways of implementing the nation's foreign policy on bilateral relations and multilateral cooperation within the European Union [K_U01].
- has the ability to understand the organization and course of protocollary events and to participate in them [K_U02].
- has the ability to observe political processes taking place within the framework of European integration and external contacts [K_U03;]
- has the ability to understand the organization and course of protocol events and to participate in them [K_U02]
- has the ability to participate properly in public events, to communicate effectively, to follow the rules of good manners, to adjust the dress code to the time and circumstances [K_U05]
- has the ability to organize and manage professional contacts [K_U06].
In terms of competence:
- is able to develop competence in interpersonal communication in a group of diverse structure and interests by fulfilling various roles in it [K_K01].
- he/she is able to use the experience and tradition of Polish diplomatic protocol, principles of good manners and etiquette in organizing group work and international contacts [K_K02].
- correctly identifies and solves dilemmas related to performing profession of a public servant on the basis of legal regulations [K_K04].
Assessment criteria
Attendance and active participation in class.
Written knowledge test of one correct answer. To pass, more than 55% of the questions must be answered correctly.
