Foreign policy of European countries 2105-M-D1PZPE
The purpose of the seminar is to present and analyze the main assumptions and processes of implementing foreign policies of selected European states, including these of the greatest potential, as well as those representing the most important regions and groups in Europe.
During the course, foreign policies of these countries are presented and studied, taking into account their basic external and internal conditions, the main geopolitical, historical, economic and social determinants, methods and instruments used and the results obtained. Possible antagonisms and differences of interests between them, as well as motives encouraging them to establish closer alliances among themselves, are also taken into account.
Topics of individual classes:
- The foreign policies of the European powers (Germany, France, United Kingdom);
- The foreign policies of the Mediterranean states (Italy, Spain, Portugal);
- The foreign policies of the neutral states (Sweden, Finland, Austria);
- The foreign policies of the Central and Eastern states (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary).

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
Within the sphere of KNOWLEDGE:
• Know about the factors which influence the foreign policies of the European states,
• Recognize the most important targets and priorities of the foreign policies of the European states,
• Understand the foreign policies of certain selected countries and their influences on the shape of contemporary Europe.
Within the sphere of SKILLS:
• Explain the genesis of contemporary relations between certain European states,
• Explain the dependency between the potential of a country and its foreign policy,
• Define the elements which influence the role and position of a country in the international arena,
• Recognize the political, economic and social potential of all analysed states.
Within the sphere of SOCIAL COMPETENCE:
• Formulate their own opinions on the activity and direction of the development of different European states,
• Be able to make a critical assessment of political events in Europe,
• Be open-minded towards ongoing research and the gathering of information on the relations between different European states.
Assessment criteria
Credit for a grade.
The final assessment of the student consists of the evaluation of the following forms of the activities:
- involvement in discussions,
- preparation of a multimedia presentation.
Attendance: the student has the right to 2 absences. Exceeding this limit results in the obligation to pass the credit during the on-call duty led by the lecturer.
