Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods in Social Sciences 2105-M-D1-MIJBS
The aim of this course is for the participants to learn about the process of empirical research in social sciences: from research design, through data collection, to analysis and description of results. Students will gain knowledge about the methods and techniques of empirical research. Issues relevant to both empirical and non-empirical research, such as defining the purpose of research, constructing research questions, reviewing literature or building convincing arguments, will also be addressed during classes.
The topics of the course include: Introduction to empirical research social science. Basic research design. Objective, questions, hypotheses, research plan.
Literature review. Justification of the research project. Quality of research. Ethical issues. Working with concepts. Non-reactive research. Field research. Qualitative data analysis. Data in quantitative studies. Sampling. Survey research. Introduction to quantitative data analysis.

Learning outcomes
Students:
- know and understand the methods used in European studies and are able to apply them in practice (K_W01, K_U07);
- know and understand in depth some of the methods and tools of social science (K_W04);
- are able to plan and prepare a study complying with academic standards, and to describe its results (K_U07);
- are able to take part in a discussion and lead it, using the views of others and their own (K_U09).
Assessment criteria
The final grade is calculated as follows:
60% - student's active participation in classes throughout the semester,
40% - test results.
The condition for passing is attendance at classes, proper performance of tasks during the semester, including the semester projet, as well as satisfactory result of the test.
